What will my child walk away with? Not just the steps to solve a problem, but a genuine sense of why the mathematics behind it actually matters. My students leave with the confidence to say they are, in fact, a math person.
What can families expect? An inclusive classroom where every student is trusted to take ownership of their own learning. I’ve taught everyone from Grade 1 students to university undergraduates, and I tailor lesson plans to fit exactly where a student is.
What does class actually feel like? Empowering and grounded in real context. We connect abstract problems to meaningful situations so students understand the reasoning behind the math, not just the mechanics.
How do you challenge a curious mind? I draw on my own research in search theory and combinatorial optimization to bring students genuinely interesting problems in logic and problem-solving, the kind that reward curiosity over speed.
Credentials and Experience I hold an Honours BSc in Mathematics and Statistics from the University of Toronto and am currently completing a thesis-based MSc in Applied Mathematics at Toronto Metropolitan University, focused on search theory, combinatorial optimization, and algorithm approximation. I currently teach as a Sessional Lecturer at the University of Toronto, having taught Discrete Mathematics, Calculus, Linear Algebra, and Introduction to Computer Science as a Teaching Assistant.
Why Liza? Why Brain Power?
I’ve made it my mission to replace ‘I’m not a math person’ with real curiosity and confidence, because I genuinely believe every student is capable of understanding mathematics. Brain Power students get an instructor who has taught this subject at every level, from elementary tutoring to university lectures, and who never stops connecting the abstract back to something meaningful.
